Baby Blues vs. PMADs

Let It Out, Mama.

Crying and sadness is perfectly normal after pregnancy and birth.

So is feeling irritable, having mood swings, withdrawing socially, and seeing a dip in your energy or motivation.

Sometimes, however, these issues don't go away on their own.

With Help, You Can Get Better.

The Baby Blues

The Baby Blues refer to hormonal and emotional changes that occur shortly after giving birth. During this time, hormones return to pre-pregnancy levels which can interfere with emotional regulation. The Baby Blues are experienced by up to 80% of people who give birth, and symptoms typically resolve on their own within the first 2-3 weeks postpartum. If symptoms persist, it's possible that a Perinatal Mood & Anxiety Disorder (PMAD) is present.

PMADs

Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs) refer to symptoms of Depression, Anxiety, OCD, PTSD, Bipolar Disorder, and Psychosis that are more severe and longer in duration than The Baby Blues. PMADs are experienced by up to 20% of people who give birth, and typically interfere with daily life. Symptoms can onset at any time during pregnancy throughout the first year postpartum, and may also impact non-birthing partners.
